Welcome back to another awesome year of math! First, we must cover some serious business! The following is an explanation of my classroom rules, grading policy, supply list, and many other valuable pieces of information. I expect you to take your time to thoroughly familiarize yourselves with this handout.
Supplies: These items must be in class with you every day
-
3 ring binder with pockets (exclusively used for math---no other subjects)
-
Sharpened pencils with eraser
-
Motivation to learn
Classroom Rules:
-
Follow all rules, policies, and procedures outlined in your student handbook.
-
Respect your teachers, your peers, the classroom, and yourself!
-
Cell phones, headphones, electronic devices, hats, and other inappropriate items should not be used in this classroom.
-
Raise your hand if you would like to answer a question, make a relevant observation, or ask a question. Do not disrespect anyone in the room who has raised his/her hand to speak. Do not interrupt me while I am speaking.
-
Upon entering the classroom, students are to sit in their assigned seats and begin the Do Now Activity. (If you arrive to class early, you are expected to begin working right away.)
-
Sharpen all pencils before class begins, not after I begin teaching.
-
Keep the classroom clean. Place all garbage in the can as you exit the room.
-
Eating or drinking is strictly prohibited inside this classroom.
-
Keep your hands to yourself at all times. Do not touch any posters/ bulletin boards, do not write on the desks and do not touch others. If you need to borrow something, please ask first.
-
Using profanity is not acceptable.
Consequences:
1st Violation: Verbal Warning
2nd Violation: After school detention
3rd Violation: Phone call home and/or office referral
Leaving during class:
You will be given a bathroom/water fountain pass sheet. Each marking period you have up to 5 passes. You can only leave the classroom if you have this sheet with you in class! A reward will be given for any unused passes.
Leaving at the end of class:
-
No one leaves class early.
-
The bell does not dismiss you. Stay seated until I dismiss the class.
-
Do not pack up early in anticipation of the bell ringing.
-
Never line up by the door. (if I see a single student line up by the door, the entire class will wait an entire minute before exiting the classroom)
-
Make sure the area around your desk is clean
If you are absent:
-
It is YOUR responsibility to complete all homework assignments and to attend an extra help session in the event you cannot understand the material on your own. Pick up handouts from the folder near my desk.
-
You must obtain the notes from a peer. I will not reteach an entire lesson during an extra help session.
-
If you miss a test/quiz/assignment, you MUST take the responsibility in scheduling a time to complete it.
-
Being out for a field trip does not excuse you from completing your work. I would appreciate it if you did not attend field trips on the days of known assessments. If this happens to be the case, I expect you to make it up the very next day. NO EXCUSES!
-
If you are absent on a Review Day, you are STILL responsible for taking the assessment on the scheduled day.
-
You have up to a week to make-up any work or assessments.
Procedures:
-
As soon as you walk into class, you will sit down and place your homework at the top right corner of your desk and begin your Do Now. (There will be occasional Do Now Quizzes. We will go over EVERY do now. So if you are completing the work and paying attention, you will do fine on Do Now Quizzes)
-
When the Do Now activity is over, instruction will begin. Do not hesitate to ask questions, at appropriate times. No calling out. Raising of hands is the most respectful way to get my attention.
-
During instruction, I expect students to actively participate and take notes.
Homework:
Homework grades are based on effort, not correctness. It is given a point value of 0-5 as follows.
-
5: assignment is completed in pencil, on time, work is shown, every problem attempted
-
2.5: at least half, but not all problems completed with work shown
-
1: Homework is attempted with no effort
-
0: Homework is not completed at all
You have the opportunity to hand in your homework 1 day late for half credit. You will be given 2 LATE HW passes. This does not excuse you from the homework. You gain 1 extra day to complete the homework for full credit. If you hold onto these passes, at the end of each marking period, you will gain an extra credit point or two.
Extra Help:
If you ever have questions at home, while completing homework, do not hesitate to e-mail me.
After school extra help sessions will be announced.
Grading Policy: No Work means No Points! Show ALL work on all assignments.
Information on Percentages will be given in class.
Cheating on Homework, Assignments, & Assessments
All students involved will receive a zero. I have no tolerance for cheating. Do not speak until all tests or quizzes have been collected. THIS is your warning. Any cheating will result in a 0 on the assignment.
Extra Credit:
Occasionally there may be some extra credit points available on assessments or assignments THROUGHOUT the marking period. There are NO extra credit assignments at the END of the marking period. I expect you to work hard throughout each marking period….not just at the end. So please understand, that if you come to me at the end of a marking period asking for extra credit, the answer will be ‘no.’
